It's the year 1991, after a success in the 8-bit console market with his Master System the Service Games (SEGA for friends) publishes his first 16-bit machine: the SEGA MegaDrive (Genesis for America).
The japanese software house, still lacking a mascotte, organizes a contest to choose an appropriate character from the ones partecipating.
The Contest was won by the blue blur: Sonic the hedgehog
A platform game with him is a big success and the next year, SEGA releases the sequel Sonic 2 where
Miles "Tails" Prower appears on the scene, becoming the ever-present Sonic's pal in all of his adventures.
In 1994 Sonic 3 is released and Sonic & Knuckles. after it.
Sonic & Knuckles cartridge has an extra connector on his upper side where ohter games could be connected.
The "fusion" with Sonic 3 created Sonic 3 & Knuckles.
But the Mega Drive knew a sad fate in his last years of life, maybe caused by the unsuccessful expansions for it (MegaCD and 32X). Even Sonic games (Sonic CD and Knuckles' Chaotix) didn't sell as excepted.
The SEGA Saturn was meaning to make the SEGA return to the old happy days, games like Nights, from Sonic Team too.
But Sonic games were just a remake of the slowest sonic game ever: Sonic 3D Blast and a racing game not enough fun as you expect from a game from Sonic Team.
A terrific marketing policy (and the enorumous cost of the machine) was the ruin of the SEGA Saturn
In the year 2000 the Dreamcast came along with 2 sonic in full 3: Sonic Adventure 1 &
2.
The Second episode intruduced a mysterious character: the black hedgehog, Shadow the Hedgehog.
Dreamcast had enormous capacity, and was even the first game console featuring and on-line game.
But the Sony Playstation 2 sold much more and the SEGA found himself with lots of debts.
So SEGA abandoned hardware in favour of software, and it even became developing videogames for his worst rival in the history of games: Nintendo!
The result was a remake of Sonic Adventure 2: Sonic Adventure 2 battle witch had an improved 2 player mode.
Now the various SEGA team develop games on the platform they prefer.
The Sonic Team, then began making games for Microsoft's X-box too.
Changing mind again, Sonic Team suspends the Sonic Adventure serie and develops a sonic game on all platforms (GameCube, Playstation 2 and X-box). This is Sonic Heroes.
And what about the future? Sonic and Mario together?
Ghostface
